World Expo 2020 disqualifies Thailand as a candidate

From the World Expo 2020 in Shanghai.

The Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) has reportedly disqualified Thailand as a candidate to host the World Expo 2020. This was in response to concerns that the bid did not have sufficient support from the Thai Government.

To prepare for the world’s largest fair, Thailand would have had to spend TBH30 billion – roughly USD1 billion. On the other hand, Russia was planning to invest as much as USD2.5 billion on their bid. Last February, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsong-phaisan stated that the government was investigating the worth of the bid to stage the expo. However, no further reports have been announced.

The Nation reports that the remaining four countries vying for the position are Ekaterinburg, Russia; Dubai, the United Arab Emirates; Izmir, Turkey; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
