Wood with a purpose: New furniture studio opens in Thong Lor

After graduating university with a degree in graphic design, Nott Vachira dedicated a year of his life to traveling around Thailand and learning about the country’s native woods and woodworking. Nott then poured his experience into founding a furniture studio called If I were a carpenter, a reference to Tim Harden’s hit single.

The shop specializes in pieces that incorporate repurposed wood, such as that derived from doorframes, floorboards or miscellaneous, abandoned projects. Nott employs these pieces of wood in new designs, often mixing elements of steel into his products. For larger projects, the shop contracts local carpenters to work with woods like teng wood, or pra-duu – a Thai jungle hardwood.

Customers are encouraged to start one-off builds. Nott works with clients to turn their ideas into actual pieces of furniture. To see an interior furnished by if I were a carpenter, head to the new coffee shop Roots in Ekkamai.

In the future, Nott plans to explore the production of textiles and steel home décor pieces. He’s also working on establishing a permanent collection of rustic-looking wooden furniture that solidifies the identity of the shop before moving into other threads and metal wares.
