Winter is coming: Shortest day of year in Thailand today

Nightfall will come earlier tonight as today is the shortest day of the year in Thailand.

The Winter Solstice falls today, marking the first day of winter and giving Thailand a shorter day time and longer night time, said Thai PBS.

Booraksa Sunthorntham, director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, said the Winter Solstice happens when the Sun rises and sets in the most southerly declination.

This means the North Pole is tilted further away from the Sun, giving us the fewest hours of sunlight in the year.

This morning the sun rose at 6.36am and will set at 5.55pm Bangkok time, Boonraksa said, giving day light hours today of just 11 hours and 19 minutes.

But good news for morning larks: after the solstice, the days will slowly start to get longer again.
