Wild elephant left to bleed to death, 6 people killed by speeding driver

An out of control driver veered off the road in Rayong province early this morning, killing six people and injuring a wild elephant who would die hours later after not receiving any medical attention, according to a wildlife protection organization.

Three died in the accident and three of five others taken to a nearby hospital later died of their injuries, according to information from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand.

But when it came the injured elephant with open wounds, help got lost on the way.

“Until this morning the elephant did not let anyone get close to him, a government rescue team is on the way to assist the elephant,” wrote the group.

Before 3pm the organization reported no help had arrived, and said that NGOs are barred from doing so:

“Still no rescue team on site, but local forestry officials say elephant has open wounds, broken leg and lost a lot of blood.”

At about 3pm, they reported the elephant died of its injuries.

“Elephant has passed away around 3pm,” WFFT wrote. “His wounds were too severe. Rest in peace big boy (he was about 18-years-old).”
