A young Thai rescue volunteer, who had only recently graduated high school in Germany, was killed on Monday while racing to the scene of an accident in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Marisa Wilaikruad, 22, died after the ambulance she was riding in crashed into a six-wheeler on Highway Route 24, just 300 meters from the scene where a bus tour had overturned, injuring 19 people.

Two other volunteers who accompanied her survived the crash, Matichon reported.

At Ban Mai Intharam temple, Marisa’s family hosted a funeral for the young woman, who had dreamed of becoming a nurse. Her grief-stricken grandmother Boonnak Wanglomklang, 67, described Marisa as a kind girl who loved to help people.

Having moved to Germany with her mother at the age of 10, Marisa came back to her hometown during the summer and volunteered with the Hook 31 Rescue Volunteer to gain experience. She was scheduled to return to Europe on May 17 and pursue further studies in order to become a nurse.

In 2015, the World Health Organization ranked Thai roads as the second-deadliest in the world behind Libya. Meanwhile, in a report last year, the World Atlas, gave Thailand the title of “Country With The Highest Road Traffic Death Rate.”
