Water-haves may donate to have-nots

Got more water than you know what to do with?

Residents will be able to donate their excess water for use by drought-sufferers, under a government scheme announced yesterday.

Water collection and distribution points would be set up throughout the kingdom under the proposal going to the cabinet for consideration tomorrow.

While the nation suffers from its worst drought in decades, heavy rain is falling in some areas, which officials said has benefited the Chao Phraya Dam in Chainat province and could see a more reliable flow of tap water to northern Bangkok again.

The drought has seen taps go dry in some communities north of Bangkok, while a number of roads have collapsed due to settling. Water levels in the major dams remain critically low.
