Warming up: Bangkok cold snap over soon, normal weather back on Friday

Don’t get too comfortable with those mittens and scarves: warm weather will return to Bangkok this Friday.

The cold high pressure front from China, which caused a massive drop in temperatures across upper and central provinces of Thailand, will soon pass, Thai PBS reported.

Temperatures in Bangkok will be back up to around 25-26 degrees Celsius, the Hydro-Agro Informatics Institute said yesterday.

Bangkok may still experience another cool spell at the end of this month when another cold pressure system brings cooler weather for a couple of days starting this Sunday. The temperature will be around 20 degrees Celsius.

Bangkok Post said today 14 people had died in Thailand during the chilly weather, mainly in the north and northeastern provinces where temperatures dropped as low as 8 degrees Celsius.

Most had chronic or respiratory related illnesses, while some were found dead after drinking alcohol.

The National Institute of Emergency Medicine warned residents in rural areas to temporarily lay off the alcohol to stave off the cold, Thai PBS reported.

Consuming large amounts of alcohol while being exposed to extreme temperatures could cause rapid heat loss and lead to body temperatures plunging below normal levels, it said.

Experts have warned of severe weather changes in Thailand this year, with the rainy season arriving later and a drought that will continue to affect farms across the country, AFP reported.
