Wage increase for skilled laborers to start Wednesday

A new daily minimum wage of THB350 to THB550 for skilled labor work will go into effect from August 10 onwards.

The Ministry of Labor has asked employers in chosen industries to follow the guideline for the new wage rate and pay their employees accordingly.

This new wage rate will be applicable to five industrial groups with over 20 different types of work alongside the 35 earlier announced.

According to the Ministry of Labor’s Permanent Secretary Puntri Smiti, the proposal for a new minimum wage was approved by the Cabinet on March 14 and would go into effect on August 10.

The purpose of the minimum wage increase is to show the importance and value of skilled labor and to stimulate the development of skill laborers to coincide with the wage increase, reported Thai PBS.

However, in order to get this wage increase, Puntri said workers must pass the National Labor Skill Standard Test.

According to her, over 70,000 workers from 55 different fields have already passed the test.

The new daily minimum wage was reported to be between THB360 to THB460 for those in the electric industry, THB400 to THB480 for those in the auto industry, THB420 to THB550 for those in the jewelry industry, and THB340 to THB550 for those in the logistics industry.
