A community police volunteer was shot when an illegal street racer fired on a rescue vehicle aiding police in an early morning bust.
Police arrested Somkiat Mekloy, 23, on suspicion of firing the gun which hit volunteer Somchai Nima in the shoulder at 2am yesterday on Liab Waree Road in the Nong Chok district of Bangkok.
Somkiat had two pen guns and 19 rounds of ammunition at the time of his arrest, according to Metro police Deputy Chief Col. Ek Ekkasart.
Police said Somkiat confessed to buying the gun for THB1,200 to defend himself against other racers, whom he was trying to shoot when he accidentally wounded the volunteer, The Nation reported.
