VIDEO: Ramkhamhaeng explosion not linked to Deep South separatist group

Earlier today, police shrugged off rumors about whether or not the bombing in Ramkhamhaeng was related to the insurgent movement in Thailand’s Deep South. They claimed that the explosion was more likely precipitated by a disagreement among roadside vendors.

Deputy police chief Pansiri Prapawat said that if the separatist group was behind the violence, the explosives used and the pattern of the bombing would have been more sophisticated, so as to create widespread fear among urban residents. According to Thairath, Pansiri said that if that was the case, there might have been more than one explosion and the explosives could have been located on the sidewalk, instead of inside a pay phone box.

Footage of the incident obtained from nearby surveillance cameras has been circulating online throughout the day. The blast blew down a row of cloth vendors’ stalls along the street. Seven people were injured from the explosion.
