Helmetless heads is a perennial contender for most-discussed public safety issue in the Kingdom, with officials, politicians and web-board pundits often left scratching their own noggins as to how to ensure more motorcyclists protect their domes.
Vespiario (Thailand) Co., Ltd., (the sole Vespa distributor in Thailand) has an idea: make motorbike safety fun. Being safe and having fun at the same time, you say? How about joining the biggest Vespa caravan in Asia as part of the 68 Years of Vespa La Festa on March 14th and contributing to road safety at the same time?
Yes. This one-of-a-kind festa not only offers motorcyclists a chance to show off their rides, chow down on some top-notch cuisine at the Italian food fair, peruse wares of yore at the Looker Magazine’s vintage market, and bob to the beats of performances by Yellow Fang, Greasy Café, Scrubb, Stamp and Flure, but riders will also get the chance to help put helmets on heads, simply by turning up!
For Vespa riders (and those on any Piaggio machine), entry is free, and for each one of you that turns up, a helmet will be donated to a Thai kid in need. And, don’t fret, you wayward easy riders on steeds of different ilk – if you’re not on a Vespa, the fee to join is a paltry THB 200, a portion of which will go to the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, whose mission as part of a collaborative international effort is “to put a helmet on every head.”
Those wishing to take part in the caravan should first register on Vespa’s website (if you like free stuff, that is – in this case a free limited-edition Vespa scarf), then turn up at Asiatique by 1:00 p.m. on March 14th for the caravan to the main event grounds at the Nang Loeng Horse Racecourse, where things are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
Everyone knows the story the statistics paint, so no need to bore with them here. The point is, helmets are crucial to saving lives and preventing motorcycle-related injuries, and anyone whose spent any amount of time on Thailand’s roads will note that many heads go uncovered. So, in the spirit of helping others save lives, and providing to those in need, get on your steel horse and ride to the 68 Years of Vespa La Festa – it’s a win-win.
