Of the 24 men now in custody, 23 were charged with the following six counts: trespassing, property damage, abuse, inciting chaos by using violence, drinking alcohol on temple grounds, and intimidation, reported Workpoint.
A 24th suspect, 32-year-old Wanlop Nuchfang, was additionally charged with sexually harassing a minor after the victim filed a police report stating she had been forcefully grabbed, kissed and verbally harassed during the invasion.
Four minors arrested will be sent to a juvenile detention center, while the 20 adult males are being held at Thon Buri Criminal Court.
However, the search for suspects isn’t over.
Speaking at a morning press conference at Royal Thai Police headquarters, Deputy Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police Gen. Chalermkiat Sriworakhan said arrest warrants have been issued for three more suspects.
Police will continue surveilling the area to assure parents of the students’ safety, he said, according to Khaosod.
Officials have also been ordered to tighten security around schools and locations where examinations are being held to make sure no such incident occurs again.
The incident that has gripped local media occurred at Mathayomwatsing, or the Wat Sing Secondary School, in Bangkok’s Jomthong district on Sunday afternoon as senior students were taking the General Aptitude Test and Professional Aptitude Test (GAT/PAT) — a key exam used to apply for universities.
At the same time, an ordination ceremony was occuring at a temple adjacent to the school. The violent outbreak was, reportedly, triggered by several repeated requests by teachers over the school’s speakers for the party to lower the volume of the music that was being blasted. When that didn’t work, a school teacher walked over to make the request in person.
Unhappy with that request, a group of about 30 men, aged 18-41 and believed under the influence, followed the teacher back to the school where they proceeded to assault and injure about eight students, six teachers and two security guards.
Education officials will let affected students retake their examination next week.
