Unrest costing transit authority millions of baht

Bangkok’s transit authority has an early case of the Christmas blues.

Due to unrest and safety concerns, bus ridership has been down to the tune of THB600,000 per day, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority announced today.

Normally the BMTA pulls in about THB10 million each day from its extensive network of bus routes, but that revenue has taken a 6 percent hit during the past few weeks, according to acting Agency Director Nares Boonpiam.

It also had to reroute 28 lines to avoid protest areas, and on streets such as Phahon Yothin Road, October’s new towing policy either wasn’t being enforced, or people didn’t care – they just left their cars in the road, making congestion worse, Bangkok Post reported.
