University teacher wears Hanfu costume to get students’ attention

This teacher went above and beyond to make sure his students paid attention. Photos showing a university lecturer wearing China’s Hanfu costume while his students held up their phones to document the moment went viral on Twitter.

The lecturer in the photo was identified as Ajarn Kittichai Pinno of the Faculty of Archaeology at Silpakorn University. He was teaching a class about ASEAN languages.

He told Morning News yesterday that the first reaction he received from students was surprise, but the youth quickly became extremely interested in the lecture.

“This subject talks about cultures of other countries. So if I dress in up in a [national] costume, the students will be able to see what it [the costume] is really like,” Kittichai said.

Kittichai said he was shy at first, but when he saw how interested the students were, he sported the costume with grace and confidence.

“The academic lecture might bore them and drive them to sleep. Things that they’ve never seen before keep them interested,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amornchai Kahakijsokon, who lectures in the same class with Kittichai and owns the costumes, said he likes to buy national costumes as souvenirs when he travels to other countries. In case you’re wondering why a grown man has a traditional Chinese costume.

So when he and Kittichai had to teach about ASEAN, they dug out the Chinese costumes for the job.

“It’s an effective teaching method. The kids are interested. I can tell they have more positive attitudes towards the class. I feel happy when teaching. If the students have fun in the class, good grades will follow,” Amornchai said.
