University student falls to her death on the night of Loy Krathong

A first-year student at a renowned university in Bangkok has tragically died, police said, after she fell from a faculty building yesterday evening.

The 18-year-old girl lost her life after falling from a 14-story building at a university in Sukhumvit. Her body was found on the ground floor at around 6:50pm by a maintenance staff member. He reported the discovery to a professor who then notified the police at around 7:30pm.

Police later arrived at the scene with forensic experts and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

The student reportedly asked a faculty staff member to go upstairs to retrieve her belongings on the eighth floor from the building after it had been closed in the evening as the university was celebrating Loy Krathong. Shortly after, a loud thud could be heard. The student was found lying face down, wearing white long pants and a round-necked red short-sleeved T-shirt.

Thonglor police told reporters that, from the initial investigation, the student’s mother said she suffered from depression and had recently argued with her boyfriend.

Police found that she had written a farewell note on her phone, which included details about her argument with her boyfriend. While police say the note may indicate that she had committed suicide, they have not ruled out the possibility of an accident.
