The internet is quickly embracing “Unboxing Grandma,” a new internet personality who casually reviews her stuff and gives it thumbs up or down on Facebook.
The Bangkok granny, who’s in her 90s, has generated over 100,000 views with her first video posted Wednesday, in which she reviewed different walking sticks she had in her home.
“Today I’m going to review walking sticks for old people,” Unboxing Grandma said in her video.
“This one is very convenient. You can hang it anywhere. If I’m alone, I can use it as a weapon. Very good!” she said with a thumbs up.
“My son bought this one for me. It’s beautiful. If I’m going to dress up nicely, this is the stick I’m going to use,” she said, and then gives the stick another thumbs up.
Her grandson, Pansan Pattanakhunchai, who is in charge of editing and posting the videos on her Facebook page, told Coconuts he wanted his granny to try new things.
“Because of her old age, going out is quite difficult for her. This means she has to stay home most of the time,” said Pansan, who refused to reveal his grandma’s name.
“She doesn’t complain very often, but sometimes she says she’s bored, so I wanted to experiment and let her review stuff.”
This reflects what the Unboxing Grandma said in her promo clip, “Ugh, I’m bored. I’m lonely. I got nothing to do. So I’m gonna review stuff in the show ‘Unboxing Grandma.”
The commenters find the old granny endearing, and many said that her video made them miss their grandparents.
“Grandma said if the audience learns or realizes something from the videos, then she’s happy. Thank you everyone for your interest in our page,” Pansan said.
Other people joked that maybe a grandma reviewing products for the elderly could someday be trending content, since Thailand will become an aging society in ten years.
