Get ready for an even bigger influx of old Western men in Bangkok as the BBC has named Thailand one of the top seven places in the world to retire.
The article named Thailand’s “low cost of living, tropical clime, culture that respects older people plus no tax on retiree income from abroad” as attractive reasons for Brits and other Westerners to consider the Land of Smiles as a retirement option.
It also pointed out that International Living Magazine ranked Thailand as one of the cheapest countries to live in.
In the magazine’s round-up of the best places to retire, which also rated Thailand highly, the editors explained their thinking in compiling the index.
“We factored in absolutely everything needed to make a great retirement destination. How much to rent? Can you catch a movie in English? What is the average humidity? Can you get direct flights to and from the U.S.? How much does a doctor’s visit cost? Do they speak English? The list goes on…”
The BBC article also noted that those who have monthly pensions of THB65,000 or can deposit THB800,000 in a Thai bank account qualify for a renewable retirement visa.
Panama, Ecuador, Malaysia, Spain, Malta and Portugal were also cursed fortunate enough to be named by the BBC as the other top six destinations for British retirees.
