Tying the knot: 3,486 Bangkok couples got married on Valentine’s Day

A total of 3,486 couples registered their marriage across the capital on Valentine’s Day, with Bang Rak remaining the most popular district among the happy couples.

While Valentine’s Day this year fell on Sunday, 38 Bangkok districts still opened in the spirit of the day of love to cater to couples who wanted to get married on the special day.

Bang Rak, the most romantic district due to the word “rak,” meaning “love,” in its name, married 1,054 couples yesterday as over 200 couples reportedly camped out at the district before dawn, hoping to win prizes and a gold marriage license plate.

A couple of 10 years, Trairat Chaleitrai, 38 and Siriporn Boonnop, 37, were the lucky pair who won a honeymoon trip to Korea, THB2 million insurance package, a marriage license made of real gold worth THB20,000, and of course the chance to brag to their other married friends.

The couple said they arrived at 5am and did not expect to win the prizes. They already held a wedding but chose Valentine’s Day to register for their marriage license.

There were 578 more couples getting married on Valentine’s Day compared to last year. The second popular district was Laksi (173 couples), followed by Bang Sue (160 couples) and Sapansoong (136 couples).

Another interesting fact about Valentine’s Day was that no one got a divorce yesterday, Thairath and MThai reported.
