Two Thai students in the United States are still missing after authorities found their car submerged in a river. It appears to have gone off a cliff in California.
Thiwadee “Min” Saengsuriyarit, a student at the University of South Florida, has not contacted her friends and family since Wednesday, when she was supposed to be traveling to California’s King’s Canyon National Park with another Thai male student, only identified as “Golf.”
According to Siam Town US, a Thai newspaper in Los Angeles, their car was found submerged off a 150-meter-high cliff by Route 180, which is about two hours from the national park.
The police have contacted experts, including the California Highway Patrol, Sheriff Rescue Team and staff from the King’s Canyon National Park, to help search for the two students, but due to the fast moving water and melted ice in the river, the rescue teams have not been able to investigate the scene.
The paper reported that Thiwadee’s sister is traveling to the U.S. to look for her.
Bussadee Santhipitak, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Thai consulate in Los Angeles is working with American authorities in finding the two Thais, Daily News reported.
Methinee Meeluea, a friend of Thiwadee’s in Thailand, shared photos of the missing girl in a public Facebook post, along with a Buddhist prayer, and asked their mutual friends to pray for Thiwadee’s safety. The post has gone viral since Sunday.
“I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what I could do. But I’d like people who know Min [Thiwadee] to pray for her and her friend Golf,” Methinee wrote.
