Two Bangkok taxi drivers arrested over rape, robbery

Two Bangkok taxi drivers were arrested in the same week, one for allegedly robbing at least nine passengers and another for an alleged rape.

In a press conference yesterday, police identified the first suspect as Jeerawat Singsoda, 36, who allegedly robbed at least nine female passengers.

The arrest followed a complaint filed by a victim, who said the cabbie took her purse and THB5,000 cash after he picked her up from Din Daeng district on Jan. 10.

Police found Jeerawat used the victim’s credit card five times at gas stations across Bangkok and tracked him down from CCTV footage.

A silver necklace, a leather handbag, a silver ring, and documents belonging to the victim were discovered in his room.

Police said Jeerawat confessed he targeted victims at entertainment venues in Sukhumvit area because most were under the influence of alcohol. Then he would pull over to a deserted area and rob them.

Jeerawat said he had robbed at least nine passengers, according to police.

Another taxi driver Arkom Shinda, 39, was accused of raping a female passenger on Wednesday night.

The victim said she had too much to drink and took Arkom’s cab from Soi Nana, but she later found herself waking up to a small hotel in Din Daeng where she was allegedly raped.

Police claimed Arkom confessed to the crime, adding it was his first offence, Bangkok Post reported.
