A tuk tuk driver in Chiang Mai was charged with reckless driving today after he was captured on video driving like a madman, never mind that his male passenger’s body was sticking out of the vehicle, feet dragging on the ground.
Police tracked down 34-year-old Akaranan Malawichai a day after the video, shot by a concerned motorist, went viral on Facebook.
On the video, the tuk tuk driver explains that the tourist had tried to throw a beer bottle at him and threatened to go to police. The tourist then gave his side of the story: “No problem at all.”
No, that doesn’t make sense.
Akaranan told police he was taking the intoxicated tourist to a massage parlor when he sped through a curve and the tourist almost fell off his seat.
He stopped the vehicle, but the tourist started an argument, threw a beer bottle at him, and demanded to go to the police. Akaranan told the tourist to get out.
It’s unclear what happened next, but Akaranan said the tourist tried to get back on the tuk tuk, and that’s when the video was filmed.
Police charged him for reckless driving and will be looking for the tourist for further investigation, Manager and Thairath reported.
