Tsunami victims remembered at ceremony in Phang Nga

A ceremony is being held today to commemorate those killed 10 years ago in the Indian Ocean tsunami in Phang Nga, the worst-hit of Thailand’s provinces.

Foreign dignitaries will join Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha at a memorial in Takua Pa district where a police boat was carried inland two kilometers by the first waves.

Prayuth will speak about his confidence in Thailand’s warning system and readiness to face another disaster in the future, according to a report in state media.

A ceremony will be held to honor the approximately 8,000 Thais and foreign visitors who died in Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004. About a quarter million people died killed or went missing in the disaster.
