In the home stretch of a five-year quest to set a Guinness cycling record, a Chilean man was killed before his wife and child by a reckless truck driver in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday.

Juan Francisco Guillermo set out in 2010 to cycle 250,000 kilometers in five years and was eight months from finishing when a truck swerved into his lane and struck the 47-year-old man. Police said he died instantly, according to Associated Press.

Guillermo’s wife was riding nearby with their two-year-old son at the time of the accident but suffered no serious injury.

Police arrested the driver and charged him with reckless driving resulting in death before releasing him on bail.

Thailand’s roads are some of the world’s most dangerous, and the incident brings to mind the 2013 deaths of a British couple conducting a similar transcontinental ride.
