Say hello to storm season. A pair of trees that once stood proudly on the city’s roadsides crashed right on top of two occupied taxis in separate incidents over the weekend. Luckily, no one was injured.

The first incident happened Saturday morning on Phayathai Road. After the rain had stopped, driver Thanya Janjam said that a tree fell onto her green cab as she sat at a red light at about 10:30am with two passengers inside the car, including one child.

Thanya said everybody inside the vehicle was shaken up by the incident, but no one was injured as the tree simply smashed into the windshield.

According to traffic radio JS100, it took an hour for officials to remove the tree from Thanya’s taxi, and the district will pay her THB3,500 (US$110) in compensation.

The incident led to an inspection of all trees along Phaya Thai Road to ensure another incident isn’t looming.

The second tree collapse happened yesterday, also after rain had stopped pouring, when a tree fell onto a red cab at the top of Sukhumvit Soi 19, near the Asoke Intersection, according to Sanook.

No one, including the cabbie, was injured. From the picture, it looks as if the cabbie, who was not identified, lucked out, as only the branches — not the trunk — seemed to make contact.

While there were no details about the damage suffered by the cab, the tree’s collapse did manage to cause a traffic jam on Sunday — something folks around Sukhumvit are already quite used to.
