Transport Ministry wants to relocate the Mor Chit bus terminal

Citing overcrowding at its Mor Chit (or “Mo Chit,” if you prefer) bus terminal, the Transport Ministry has announced plans to relocate the transport hub.

Currently, the Transport Ministry is in discussions to end its lease for the 73-rai patch of land in the Chatuchak area with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

However, while the Transport Ministry insists that this move is necessary to prevent overcrowding at Mor Chit, the plan has plenty in the way of opposition.

Some critics have insisted that locating the Mor Chit bus terminal further away from the center of Bangkok would effectively put an end to inter-provincial bus traffic within Thailand. What’s more, a less-convenient northern bus terminal is likely to drive more travelers away from the city’s bus infrastructure and toward privately owned van services that depart from many parts of Bangkok, bound for its further-flung suburbs.

As of the present, the Transport Ministry has yet to solidify its choice for relocating the Mor Chit terminal. The Bangkok Post reports that in addition to the plot of land currently under the SRT’s ownership, the Transport Ministry is also considering a 100-rai plot near Future Park Rangsit, which was recommended by an internal, ministry study of the matter.
