A passenger train slammed into a truck as it attempted to cross the tracks in southern Thailand this morning, killing the mother and young son inside.

At about 7:30am, Tha Chana district police in Surat Thani Province received a report that a Sprinter Train Number 39/41 — which runs from Bangkok to Surat Thani and Yala — had collided with a car at a railway intersection.

The collison killed 38-year-old Raweewan Semrod and her 10-year-old son Manootsak Semrod, reported Khaosod.

Volunteer rescuers stated on their Facebook page that Manootsak had been thrown from the vehicle due to the impact while Raweewan was stuck in the car and had to be pried out with a cutting tool.

Both bodies were reportedly transported to Ta Chana hospital.

Police suspect the pair had been on their way to school at the time of the incident, though it is unclear they had attempted to cross the tracks with the train approaching.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
