Trailer truck hits pedestrian bridge, causing collapse

A trailer truck hit the beam of a pedestrian bridge on Borommaratchachonnani Road in eastern Bangkok this Saturday, causing the bridge to drop on a passing pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup was killed instantly. Traffic was congested for nearly six hours as four cranes were brought in to remove the 30-ton block of concrete. Southbound traffic was redirected to the nearby roads to reduce traffic.

According to The Nation, the 28-wheeler truck was carrying an oil-rigging machine and was part of a three-truck motorcade led by a police cruiser heading southbound. The two trailer trucks that followed managed to stop in time. The driver, Thanongsak Sathitpao, is being charged for causing death through carelessness.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the police cruiser did not stop and continued on as the accident ensued. Following the events, he disappeared. Division chief Pol Maj-General Piya Tawichai stated that he will investigate and see if the policemen in the cruiser should also be held liable for the accident.
