Traffic floods Bangkok as Buddhist holidays end

People flocked back into the capital on Tuesday evening as the Buddhist Lent holiday drew to a close. The Mochit bus terminal and Hua Lamphong train station were packed with arriving passengers who clogged up the surrounding roads as they head home on taxis and other vehicles.

The arriving passengers fled the capital to join family and friends during the Asalha Puja and Buddhist Lent holidays that extended from the weekend. Many returned before Tuesday evening to avoid traffic jams on highways leading into Bangkok.

Some passengers at Mochit bus terminal were spotted coming back into the city with food and other items, reportedly to keep their expenses in Bangkok down.

A large number of people chose to use the train for their return trip. Officials at the city’s main rail station advised returning passengers to use the bus or subway to get to their residence and avoid packed roads around the station.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, several hundred passengers at the 2nd bus terminal in the downtown area found themselves without bus seats traveling to Bangkok. Reporters said these were transit passengers who had come from other provinces to catch a bus to Bangkok.

Tents with free cold water and televisions were set up for passengers to wait more comfortably while extra buses were dispatched for Tuesday evening.
