Though he already had an offer for the land he owned in the village of Na Bin La, in Trang province, a sweet old man named Thong Kongkaew, 91, decided to donate it instead to build a road that will save local residents lots of time when traveling between his village and the next one, called Na Yong Tai.
The man, a farmer, owns 16 rai of land and is nicknamed Great Grandpa Thong by locals.
Now, instead of traveling all the way around Great Grandpa Thong’s land, they can drive through it on a public road. The man made the kind donation of an 8-meter-wide strip that is 350-meters-long, to honor his deceased wife.
To thank him, villagers rented a billboard to thank the man for his good deed, reported Bangkok Post.
Great Grandpa Thong’s wife, Thanom, was ill and got around in a wheelchair before she passed away. He loved her very much and decided that he wanted to do something noble to honor her.
His daughter, Somsong Boonmak, called her dad a loving man that spent time regularly clearing garbage from the roadside near their land.
The road has already been completed and opened for use. It’s name? Thuad Thong Uthid, which translates as Great Grandpa Thong Road.
Though Great Grandpa Thong had been offered cash for the land, he knew he would rather do a good deed with it.
“If people spend their lives earning money, it can all disappear in just a few days of spending. But if someone does a good deed, it will last a long time, even after their death,’’ said the wise man.
