Whatever you think of the tangled messes of overhead cables throughout Bangkok, one man discovered they have a very practical use as hammocks.
Thong Lor police and utility workers initially believed they were retrieving an electrocuted corpse from a tangle of cables yesterday at the entrance of Soi Phai Singto. To their surprise, after summoning a crane to fetch his body, they discovered the man was quite alive – just drunk and incomprehensible.
The unidentified man, who had traveled from his home in the Isaan province of Maha Sarakham, revealed that he had come to Khlong Toei to cash in his second-place winnings from Saturday’s lottery.
He had won THB4,000 (US$115) with 111 as his first three digits. After cashing in, he decided to celebrate. After having one or seven too many, he succumbed to the singular impulse of some Thai men in a deranged state: find the nearest thing to climb.
He managed to ascend a tree in the middle of the night from which he climbed into the nest of cables and passed out. Police said he was still drunk when brought down Sunday but otherwise in good shape.
