People who identify themselves as “third gender” spend longer on the internet than males and females, according to a survey on internet usage in Thailand released by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology yesterday.
Out of 10,434 respondents, 1.8 percent identified themselves as “Third Gender” and they were found to spend an average of 58.3 hours per week on the internet, longer than males and females who spend an average of 50.4 hours each.
[Ed. note: While the term “third gender” may or may not associate with one’s sexual orientation in some countries, the term is mainstream in Thai and used to refer to the LGBT community.]
In terms of age, Gen Y spends the most time on the internet with an average of 54.2 hours a week. Out of all groups, smartphones win the vote as the main tool to connect to the internet.
Most people use the internet for social networking (82.7%) while some of the most popular online activities are searching for information (56.6%) and reading news (52.2%).
Suffer from a slow connection? You’re not alone. Slow internet is the main problem respondents encounter followed by boring online commercials, and other connection problems.
In e-commerce, fashion products are the most popular accounting for 42.6 percent of online sales followed by IT products (27.5%) and and health products (24.4%), Thai PBS reported.
