That’s all, folks: Prayuth declines to take media questions after last week’s debacle

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha perhaps wisely decided to keep schtum today and passed on his usual press conference after losing his temper with the media last week.

The junta chief, who usually holds a press conference after the weekly Cabinet briefing, decided to step aside after being criticised for his short fuse last week and got deputy prime minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, to take questions instead, the Nation reported.

But not before a quick parting shot to those pesky reporters, reminding them to “ask good questions.”

Last Wednesday the PM lost his cool after being repeatedly questioned about the draft constitution and the upcoming election, which has been pushed back to next year.

In response to one question about the election, he yelled: “You ask me every day like… will the election be in 2017? That’s all you do! Just go have an election tomorrow. Go vote for someone! And what if you get a crappy one. What are you gonna do?”

He was also filmed banging on a podium as his frustrations with the media grew, causing his glasses to go flying and a sheepish security guard creeping around him to retrieve them.

But today Prayuth opted for a new tack, with Wissanu informing the media that deputy prime ministers and ministers would be take the press conference in the PM’s place from now on.

He explained that they would have more details to offer the press than the PM, who was more concerned with “the big picture.”

But rest assured there are no bad feelings — when greeted by the Thai press this morning he was filmed replying quietly: “Be happy.”
