Thaksin faces losing police rank

Thaksin Shinawatra is set to lose his police lieutenant colonel rank after Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said he has received the recommendation from the police.

The junta leader said it is not necessary to forward the matter to cabinet for approval.

The latest push to strip Thaksin of his rank came last month, when Gen Prayut ordered Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya to set up a panel to look into the matter.

The panel made its decision based on the fact the former prime minister is a criminal fugitive, which is one of the criteria needed to strip a police officer of his rank, reported the Bangkok Post.

Thaksin left the police force decades ago.
