Thais among Asia’s happiest workers: jobsDB survey

Thais have shown consistency when it comes to job satisfaction and being optimistic at work, according to jobsDB’s 2016 Happiness Index Report.

Among people in the seven Asian countries surveyed, Thais have the third highest job happiness rate (5.74) behind Filipinos (6.25) and Indonesians (6.16) on an 11-point scale. The countries in the study that rated on the lower end of the scale were Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The Happiness Index Report, which collected data from 1,957 Thai respondents, provides companies with information on the factors that cause employees to leave or stay with a company. The report also shares the factors that affect people’s happiness in their jobs. Respondents are a mix of people ranging from fresh graduates to those in supervisory and managerial positions.

The results show that 61 out of 100 Thais feel positively about their work, compared to 71 Indonesians, and 73 Filipinos. Looking deeper into the results, the most satisfied Thai employees are those who have stayed with their current companies for 3 to 5 years. The happiest employees are those holding positions in management, hospitality, administration, human resources, engineering, and finance.

When it comes to what they love about their jobs, Thais put their priority on their work location and the possibility of working wherever they want into the consideration. This is attributed to the traffic situation in the country’s metropolitan areas and the relational nature of Thais.

Meanwhile, the top factors that make employees leave a company are uninspiring leadership, career underdevelopment, and lack of trainings.

To increase job happiness, 34 percent Thai respondents would rather look for better opportunities and get a new job elsewhere. 19 percent will consider sticking it out with their current jobs as long as they get a salary increase, while 8 percent would be happier should they get more recognized or promoted at work.

Noppawan Chulakanista, jobsDB Thailand’s Managing Director said that through this report, they could equip employers of the information they need to improve the happiness levels of their employees.

“Satisfied and engaged employees make a company, which is in line with our advocacy of happy is a better job. Through our report, we hope to inform our employers of the current factors that make employees contented and what it takes to keep them satisfied,” she said.
