In today’s failed marketing campaign of the day, Coca-Cola’s Thai Mothers’ Day campaign is drawing criticism from Thai netizens for its perceived insensitivity.
To celebrate this year’s upcoming Mother’s Day, the soft drink company launched a new can collection in Thailand with the Thai phrase “song coke hai mae,” or “send Coca-Cola to mom” emblazoned on the iconic red container.
Unfortunately for Coke, the Thai people seem to have understood this as an affront to moms everywhere.
A photo of the offending Coca-Cola can, which was first shared to a popular Facebook page called Hell Eating Association of Thailand, caused a heated online backlash as netizens accused Coca-Cola of attempting to make their mothers diabetic with the syrupy goodness.
Since then the campaign has taken on a life of its own with netizens photoshopping the cans with phrases like, “send Coca-Cola to mom to get diabetes.”
