It’s time to be a proud Thai again as the kingdom was ranked first for its handling of and recovery from the COVID-19 crisis by a Malaysian index.
All the trouble we’ve endured with the face masks, temperature gun headshots and intrusive government tracking paid off on the the Global Covid-19 Index, published yesterday by a Malaysian consultancy and backed by its science ministry, which put Thailand above South Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand.
Based on metrics including infection and mortality rates over time, the index assigned Thailand a score of 82.06. South Korea ranked second at 81.09, followed by Latvia (80.81), Malaysia (79.37), Taiwan (78.94) and New Zealand (78).
Health officials today announced a single new case in a Thai military officer back from Hawaii. No domestic cases of transmission have been reported in 65 days. Since becoming the first nation outside China to detect the virus, total reported infections has reached 3,298, 3,111 of which are said to have recovered. The death toll has stood at 58 since June 2.
