‘Thailand’s new normal’: Former PM Anand to give FCCT keynote speech

Former Thai prime minister Anand Panyarachun will give a keynote speech at the InterContinental Bangkok, organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) later this month.

The still-influential figure, 83, will speak to foreign correspondents about his personal vision of what Thailand must do to create a brighter future for its people.

His speech, entitled “In Search of Thailand’s New Normal” builds on a previous talk he gave in Brussels in 2008 discussing “Sustainable Democracy.”

In that speech he talked about the “seven pillars” essential to democracy: namely, elections, political tolerance, the rule of law, freedom of expression, accountability and transparency, decentralization, and civil society.

Anand served as Thai Prime Minister twice, first in 1991-1992, and then a second term in 1992. His government oversaw reform in several key areas, including tax and trade regimes, industrial restructuring, environmental management, educational and health services.

More recently he has served on several advisory boards, and led national panels on national reform and the restive South and national reform.

The event begins with a drinks reception at 6pm, followed by dinner at 7pm and the keynote speech at 8pm.

Tickets are THB1,900 for members, and THB2,700 for non-members. Contact the FCCT for tickets.
