Thailand’s maybe-next PM outs self as Swiftie, seeks duet with Taylor

Restoring democracy, reining in the military, reforming 112. These are the issues Pita Limcharoenrat and his party campaigned on to win the most votes in May’s election.

Late Thursday afternoon, Pita staked out a position that could be even more critical to many of his supporters, admitting to being a “big fan” of Taylor Swift in a message to the singer while taking a swipe at the consequences of military rule.

“Hey Taylor! Big fan of yours,” the popular 42-year-old politician wrote a tweet tagging the American pop star. “Btw, Thailand is back on track to be fully democratic after you had to cancel last time due to the coup.”

Thai fans go through dark, sad days after Taylor Swift cancels concert

Swift’s cancellation of her first Bangkok concert in the wake of the military putsch of 2014 might have been the first thing to give coup supporters buyer’s remorse. When she announced The Eras tour set for early next year, Singapore was the only Southeast Asian date, leaving many Thai swifties inconsolable.

What’s even more, Pita seemingly invited himself onto the stage in his message, which he signed using his nickname, Tim.

“The Thai people have spoken via the election and we all look forward to welcoming you to this beautiful nation of ours!” he wrote. “Do come and I’ll be singing Lavender Haze with you! – Tim”
