Thailand under curfew starting Friday night: Prayuth

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha this evening announced that an overnight curfew would be imposed starting tomorrow.

Saying it was necessary to combat spread of the coronavirus, Gen. Prayuth in an address to the nation said no one would be allowed to leave their residences from 10pm to 4am.

“We must not be reckless. We must join hands,” he said. “We mustn’t allow infections to spread further. This depends on all of you.”

He announced no additional measures beyond the curfew at this time.

Limited exceptions include essential travel by officials involved in medical relief, finance, logistics or the facilitation of pharmacy or medical equipment.

Anyone who violates the curfew will face up to a THB40,000 fine and/or two-year imprisonment.

His government granted him the power to execute such orders under the Emergency Decree that came effective last week. Declaring a state of emergency gave full authority to the prime minister and provincial governors to take unilateral measures to deal with the COVID-19 crisis.

As of Thursday, at least 1,875 people had taken ill and 15 died since January.
