Thailand tweeted almost 2 billion messages in 2013

We own Instagram and dominate Line. More than one in three of us are on Facebook. And it turns out Thailand’s saturation of social media hasn’t slowed, even on the dimming star of Twitter: Users tweeted 1.7 billion Thai-language messages in 2013, an increase of 45 percent over 2012.

Those 1.7 billion messages were generated by 1.73 million users who posted 800 million new messages, 450 million mentions and 150 million replies, according to ThaiTrend.

The most active day came near the end of the year on Dec. 1, during the height of anti-government protests in Bangkok. About 7.5 million tweets were sent during that 24-hour period.

According to ThaiTrend’s data, users sent an average of 4.5 million messages in Thai each day and hit five million to six million on holidays.

The biggest draw however, according to ThaiTrend, isn’t politics or news but celebrities.

None other than 2PM’s Nichkhun Horvejkul can brag about having the most followers, with more than two million subscribers, Tech in Asia reported.

A cursory glance of his account’s compelling content reveals an abiding love of television, charity and himself.
