Thailand tightens traffic law enforcement at major tourist destinations

Thailand has announced it is tightening traffic laws at major tourist destinations as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Police will step up enforcement of the rules for motorists and motorcyclists at Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ko Samui, Phuket, Hat Yai, Samut Prakan and Ayutthaya, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

The move is part of a broader effort to improve safety and security across the country.

The key traffic no-nos that will be enforced are as follows:

  • driving on the pavement
  • driving without a license
  • driving against the traffic/not giving way to pedestrians at crossings
  • driving without wearing a seatbelt/helmet
  • careless or inconsiderate driving
  • driving under the influence/driving while intoxicated
  • illegal car accessorising
  • parking in a prohibited space

Thailand’s Tourist Police can be contacted on hotline 1155.
