A new proposal states that all tourists visiting Thailand should need to show proof of travel insurance. The bill, offered by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, will next be reviewed by the National Tourism Policy Commission.

The ministry first mentioned the proposal to require travel insurance last year. They said that the reason is because the country can’t adequately monitor or meet the needs of the large number of tourists that are starting to visit annually.

One aspect of this is the growing number of uninsured tourists that get into accidents and can’t afford to pay for their medical care in the country.

Thailand expects to host well over 30 million tourists this year. But, this new requirement might make some tourists skip the destination.

A source told Bangkok Post that the new requirement shouldn’t be viewed as a hinderance to visiting the country.

In fact, they may even install automatic travel insurance vending machines at the country’s international airports and land borders.
