Hong Kong put animal lovers on alert after a dog potentially tested positive for the virus, while Thailand reported its 41st case.

A Thai tour guide who had returned from working in South Korea went to a hospital Monday with a cough and fever. This morning, the man’s positive test results were announced, making him the 41st official case in the realm.

Two nearby schools in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district, Harrow International School and Phraharuthai Donmuang School – have closed due to coronavirus fears.

Harrow decided to close after 500 students and teachers reportedly returned from a virus-hit country. It was unspecified which country it was.

“We have decided in the interests of both our school community and the local community, for Harrow Bangkok to close for the next six school days, from 28th February until 6th March 2020, inclusive,” the school announced on its website.

It noted that no students or employees had been diagnosed with the disease.

A private school in Rayong province also closed today amid rumors a pupil fell ill after returning from Japan. Many other Bangkok schools were already closed this week due to hazardous air pollution.

A medical team yesterday urged those suspected of contracting COVID-19 or who have recently traveled to virus-hit countries to avoid withholding any information that may be useful to health authorities. The announcement by Siriraj Hospital’s medical team came after an infected man, who recently traveled to Japan, lied about his travel history until he was confirmed to have COVID-19.

Down in Singapore, three new cases were reported, Malaysia ended two weeks of silence by announcing its 23rd in someone who’d recently visited Japan.

COVID-19 has infected more than 80,000 people and killed nearly 3,000, mostly in China. Several secondary outbreaks continue to grow, primarily in South Korea, Italy, and the Middle East, where new cases have soared since yesterday.

In other parts of Asia, Hong Kong and Singapore have been proactively detecting new cases while the world sees a lack of response from more insular countries including Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

The World Health Organization does not yet consider the global outbreak a pandemic but recognizes its “potential” to become one.

Major updates since yesterday:

  • Saudi Arabia has closed its holy sites to foreigners and barred entry to Muslim pilgrims
  • The United States reported its first coronavirus case with unknown origin.
  • At least seven countries reported their first cases in the past 24 hours, including Brazil, Nigeria, and Netherlands.
  • Hong Kong announced yesterday they found a trace of the virus in a dog.
  • South Korea reported another 256 cases today, surpassing 2,000 known infections. Half of the new cases were linked to a religious sect.
