Thailand to promote itself as a world Buddhist center through celebrations of Visakha Bucha Day

Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan announced a series of activities to celebrate this year’s “Visakha Bucha Day,” one of the most important Buddhist holidays in Thailand that falls on May 24. This year’s celebrations are aimed at promoting Thailand as a world Buddhist center as well as inspiring Thai Buddhists to bring religious teachings into practice in their everyday life.

According to Niwattumrong, the celebrations will be held as a tribute to the Royal Family and His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara as well. His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, who will turn 100 on October 3, 2013, is the Supreme Patriarch, or the head of the order of Buddhist monks in Thailand.

The activities will run nationwide until May 24. One of them is an international academic conference organized by Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University on May 21-22 at the United Nations Conference Center on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road. Visakha Bucha Day marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha.
