New York-set thriller Countdown was chosen by the Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand as its nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards.
Directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya and produced by the GTH studio, Countdown is about three Thai teens in Manhattan who are terrorized and tormented in their apartment by a sadistic drug dealer named Jesus on New Year’s Eve.
The film, released in December 2012, picked up three awards at the Thailand National Film Association Awards for best editing, best screenplay, and best actor for David Asavanond as drug dealer Jesus.
No Thai film has ever made the Academy’s shortlist in the best foreign language category.
The Academy will announce the nominations on Jan 16, 2014, Hollywood Reporter reported.
