The nation’s strictest measures, including an overnight curfew, will be expanded to the 29 worst-hit provinces as incremental measures fail to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Starting on Tuesday, lockdown measures including a 9pm to 4am curfew, travel limits and dining bans will be in place for two weeks in the provinces, including 16 newly designated “dark red,” according to Apisamai Srirangsan of the COVID-19 task force.

Gatherings of more than five people will also be forbidden.

The 29 provinces are Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya, Chonburi, Chachoengsao, Kanchanaburi, Tak, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Prachinburi, Phetchaburi, Phetchabun, Rayong, Lopburi, Ratchaburi, Singburi, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala.

Although the measures will continue until Aug. 18, Apisamai said at the briefing that they would be reviewed and possibly extended until the end of August.

Health officials this morning announced another 17,970 infections in the previous 24-hour period, over three times the amount being recorded daily one month ago. Another 178 deaths were logged.
