Thailand considers opening ‘tourist court’

Soi Cowboy: Location of a great many crimes and transgressions

In an effort to plug an unctuous hole in the Thai legal system, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has called for the creation of a “Tourist Court,” which will handle civil and criminal lawsuits brought by foreign visitors.

As it stands, many foreign visitors leave Thailand before the legal actions in which they are involved can be completed. As a result, many instances of petty theft, assault and graft go unpunished.

However, if the proposed Tourist Court is brought into existence, it will expedite the legal process, allowing justice to be served before tourists return to their home countries.

China’s Xinhua Net reports that the Ministry is currently discussing the idea with Thailand’s judicial branch and that if approved, legislation for the change will then be passed through congress.
