Thailand considers helping Myanmar improve its data transmission

Thailand’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology said yesterday that the country is considering providing Myanmar with the necessary cables to enable international transmission of data. This would serve as an alternative to Myanmar’s current data cables, which travel through China.

Mr. Anudith Nakornthap said that giving Myanmar an extra gateway will improve the country’s communication and will make it less likely to be disrupted.

Myanmar currently gains its internet access via China. Anudith averred that should anything happen to Myanmar’s Chinese data cables, the country would be unable to do business, a prospect that seems especially disastrous at this moment, as Myanmar continues its hard-won fight toward integration with the region.

Myanmar has been looking for other data options and one such option would be to go through Thailand, the Wall Street Journal reported.
