Thailand and Laos start annual longboat competition

Thailand and Laos have started their annual traditional longboat competition to compete for the Queen Sirikit Cup.

The longboat competition is just one of several historical ties and traditions that bind the neighboring nations of Thailand and Laos where they meet along the Mekong River. The Queen Sirikit Cup longboat competition began in only 2013 but is a much loved new tradition.

It was designed to preserve and promote the traditional practice and sportsmanship of longboat paddling, reported National News Bureau.

This year’s competition features nine teams from Laos and 23 teams from Thailand, consisting of 14 large longboats and 18 small longboats.
