Thailand on Thursday reported only seven new cases of COVID-19 without any new deaths, marking the fourth straight day of single-digit updates. No additional fatalities were reported.
As the country eyes relaxing some restrictions to jump start the stalled economy, the new report brings the outbreak’s total known impact to 2,954 infections and 54 fatalities since it began, though actual numbers are likely higher.
Asked about mental health issues and jump in suicides linked to the crisis, task force spokesman Taweesilp Wissanuyothin said family and friends must be vigilant and contact mental health officials if they see worrying signs.
While some restrictions must be eased, Taweesilp said others would remain in place, such as the nationwide overnight curfew (10pm-4am) and a ban on inbound flights. Working from home will still be advised.
Provincial governors will have the final word on easing measures in their provinces.
Starting Monday, six types of venues will be allowed to reopen, and they must carry specific measures. They include non-food markets, barbershops, vet clinics, restaurants and supermarkets with dining spots.
Outdoor exercise in public parks are allowed. However, the activities must be non team sports.
Taweesilp said the task force would monitor the situation for the next 14 days, and if the rate of infection remains the same, they may consider reopening more businesses.
As for the booze ban his task force has proposed extending another month, Taweesilp offered vaguely that liquor sellers shouldn’t change anything “until further notice.”
Despite word spreading that Bangkok would continue its current ban on alcohol sales uninterrupted through the end of May, no formal decision has been announced yet.
